Now in it’s sixth edition, Wants&Needs Danse is proud to partner with the Festival Trans- Amériques to present the latest edition of Short&Sweet, an event which celebrates the diversity within the Montreal contemporary dance community.
This time around, we are offering to the public a kind of “best of” edition, featuring artists who have brought the house down in previous editions Short&Sweet, and mixing it up with some fresh new choreographers and special surprises.

The concept:
Short&Sweet gives 23 choreographers carte blanche to create whatever they want as long as it is under 3 minutes! A timekeeper is present for the event and any artist going over the allotted time frame has their music and lights immediately cut off.

Taking place at the Quartier Général of the FTA, this edition of Short&Sweet will add an exciting nightlife element to the Festival’s programming, and create an entertaining and un- intimidating way for the public to see a great variety of contemporary dance work in a party like atmosphere.

Community Building:

The Short&Sweet events have been praised for bringing Montreal’s contemporary dance community together, bridging the gaps of language, age and experience. The event has allowed choreographers the invaluable opportunity to see the different ideas that their peers are working on, as well as to discuss their craft with one another.

Come have a drink with us and celebrate Montreal’s diverse dance community!

Some quick video footage of the Place Des Arts installation by departement featuring Andrew Tay artistic director of wants&needs danse.   Go down and see it! It will be up for the next year.

Andrew Tay’s piece on Power and permission got a mention in the Dance year in review for the Montreal Mirror.  Dance critic Marites Carino writes :

On a smaller scale, in October at Tangente, I saw an impressive duo by Andrew Tay and Natalie-Zoey Gauld that was part of Tay’s work On Power and Permission. In this mostly improvised duet, Gauld’s movements became dependent on Tay’s, to the point where they moved as a flowing unit and I wanted to see more.

Some more great reviews

Thought we’d post some recent reviews of our work in the winter dance season.  The following are links to a critque on Involved II which we just presented in December @ Studio 303.  Also following that is a really positive reveiw on both Sasha Kleinplatz’s piece All the ladies and AndrewTay’s piece On Power and Permission that were both presented in Oct @ Tangente.  Courtesy of the great online dance magazine DF danse.

INVOLVED 2

December 11th 2010 at 7pm & 9pm
at Studio 303

with:
Andrew Tay
Namchi Bazar
Sarah-Ève Grant
Patrick Lloyd Brennan
Mary St-Amand Williamson
Natalie Zoey Gauld / Ashlea Watkin

For the second edition of INVOLVED, we curated works that question the audience’s relationship to the performance using varied methods. You will see works in which the audience is involved physically in the performance, where spectators make decisions on the evolution of the work as it develops, where the audience is an unwilling participant in the dance itself, and pieces where the audience’s perspective on viewing the work is challenged through external devices. We have a great selection of artists coming from diverse backgrounds and think it be another amazing evening of dance!!

Powerful new works by both Sasha Kleinplatz and Andrew Tay. Not to be missed.

On Power and Permission…

(choreographed by Andrew Tay)

How does society perceive Masculinity?  How much does female gender identity depend on the comparison to it’s masculine counterpart?

Poetic, postmodern and visually striking, On Power and Permission takes the audience on a sensorial journey that questions society’s view of male and female gender roles. Through a series of intense images, the work confronts the viewer with intense visions of power, infatuation, domination and servitude. Comparing both male and female bodies in terms of physical strength, and as sexual objects, On Power and Permission presents many different perspectives on the issue of gender identity and allows audience members to walk away with their own conclusions.

All the ladies

 (choreographed by Sasha Kleinplatz)

All the Ladies posits an all female space where women act out fantasies of rampant masculinity, and openly fetishize their body neuroses. The performers are an all-girl fight club loitering, restlessly stalking the stage, and wrestling their own bodies into submission.

After Short&Sweet 5….

What a special edition of Short&Sweet!  Bringing together a great audience who is open to anything and an amazing collection of creative artists…it was definitely a winning combination.  There is definitely something fresh and unpretentious about the event that we hope is helping to get people interested in dance work. For those who missed out, check out these photos from the event.  Photos by the amazing Celia Spenard-Ko

This time around, Short&Sweet is part of SPARK, an initiative conceived by Studio 303 which brings together some of Montreal’s most cutting-edge underground artists.

The Concept
:

Short&Sweet gives 28 choreographers carte blanche to create whatever they want as long as it is under 3 minutes! A timekeeper is present for the event and any artist going over the allotted timeframe has their music and lights immediately cut off.

Taking place in a relaxed cabaret/bar setting, Short&Sweet manages to keep the atmosphere light and gives the audience a chance to see dance outside of the traditional theatre venue context.

Community Building: The Short&Sweet events have been praised for bringing Montreal’s contemporary dance community together, bridging the gaps of language, age and experience. The event has allowed choreographers the invaluable opportunity to see the many different ideas that their peers are working on, as well as to discuss their craft with one another.

Fundraising: Proceeds from this edition of Short&Sweet will be used to support choreographers Andrew Tay & Sasha Kleinplatz in the production of their next show at Espace Tangente this October.

———————————————

Piss in the Pool 2010 – It was another great edition of the Pool show this year! Thanks to all of the artists, dancers volunteers and of course the audience which make the event such a special dance happening every summer.  Congratulations to Flow rider and Tonik who won the Prix flexi for their choreography : Free, Fluid, Feminine. Also congrats to Andrew Tay who received an honorable mention.  This was one of the critically most successful years ever for Piss in the Pool.
