3rd Floor Residency

The 3rd floor residency is a new initiative created by Usine C which recently gave emerging dance artists the space to research ideas in their smaller rehearsal studio (on the 3rd floor). On March 31st and April 1st we will share some of this research with friends and peers. This is not a showing of finished work, but a presentation of ideas that were developed over the 2 week residency period. We are hoping to get feedback on these ideas while they are fresh and still in their early development stages.

Short&Sweet 7 Collaborative edition

For those who missed it, here are some photos of what went down at Short&Sweet 7.  It was a great night full of different types of cool artistic collaborations.  The night had something for everyone with pieces that made us laugh, think and were touching.  Don’t forget the awesome audience that makes the event more like a party then a dance show.  Check out all of these reviews and press mentions about Short&Sweet.  See you soon @ Short&Sweet 8 as part of the FTA!!  (lovely photos by Celia Spenard-Ko)

SHORT&SWEET #7

Now in it’s seventh edition, Short&Sweet returns to the Sala Rosa with a focus on the collaborative process. Inviting choreographers to work with other Montreal artists (actors, visual artists, filmmakers, musicians etc) to create their short pieces.

On Feb 16th, 25 choreographers and their collaborators will have carte blanche to create whatever they want… as long as it is under 3 minutes. As usual, a timekeeper is present for the event and artists going over the allotted time frame will have their music and lights immediately cut off!

Please join us for a drink on Feb 16th and sample a diverse blend of short works from the city’s contemporary dance community.

Involved 3 @ Studio 303…. This really was a great event for us, with the choreographers taking risks and each using  different approaches for bringing the audience into their works.  The audience really got into it too! This was a program of work which challenged and asked questions and at the same time managed to be fun. Thanks to choreographers Simon Portigal, Emma Waltraud Howes, Hannah Dorozio, Thierry Huard, Jody Hegel, Victoria Stanton and Adriana Disman.  Photos by Celia Spenard-Ko

Andrew Tay will be taking part in Parcours danse Nov 23-25.  The event produced by Danse Sur Les Routes du Quebec exposes the work of local choreographers to producers in the regions and from across Canada.  Andrew will be talking about Wants&Needs and it’s dance initiatives, as well as presenting an excerpt from On Power and Permission.  He will also be taking part in the event’s “Action Culturelle”.   Remounting his duet The Sticks with dancer Marilyne St. Sauveur. This performance will takes place at 8:30am on Nov 24th in the hallways of the Place des Arts while everyone is commuting to work.  If you’re in the area, be sure to check it out.

LADDMI FLY Project

The FLY project was initiated in order to give recent graduates of the LADMMI contemporary dance program the chance to develop their skills as interpreters and performers with an established Montreal choreographer-Mélanie Demers.  Mélanie has invited Sasha Kleinplatz to present All the Ladies redux as an opening act for the evening. Sasha is excited to be a part of this dynamic pilot project!

Wants&Needs artistic director Andrew Tay recently collaborated with videographer Dorian Nuskind-Oder to create the visuals for the North American tour for the Montreal band Moonface (the new project from Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug and percussionist Mike Bigelow).  Check out this cool vid from their performance in Texas.  We think it’s really cool that Spencer really wanted to add a dance element to their performance.
